Leaked AIB BIOSes indicate that AMD RX 6700 XT could hit a whopping 3 GHz when overclocked

A set of AIB BIOSes accessed by Igorslab indicate that board partner Radeon RX 6700 XT could leverage the 7nm process to hit significantly higher clocks than existing Big Navi cards, meaning near-3 GHz overclocks on air cooling could become a reality.

Igorslab recently got its hands on a pair of BIOSes for what appear to be AIB RX 6700 XT units. The BIOSes, when loaded into the MPT (MorePowerTool) utility, indicate that the Navi 22-based RX 6700 XT could clock even higher than Big Navi. The “GFX Clock” max limit in MPT goes up to 2950 MHz on the RX 6700 XT, which is substantially higher than the theoretical limit for the RX 6800 XT.

Whether or not RX 6700 XT units will actually hit clockspeeds that high is still up for debate (especially so, considering the card hasn’t even been announced yet). However, some air-cooled RX 6800 XT units go as high as 2.8 GHz, with overclocks in the 2.5 to 2.7 GHz range fairly common.

Another factor in favor of high RX 6700 XT clockspeeds is what we’ve seen in the console space: the PlayStation 5 sports a very similar GPU design to Navi 22, with a partially-enabled 40 CU die. Consoles tend to run conservative GPU clocks and the PlayStation 5 impressed us with a 2.1 GHz GPU clock. This strongly indicate that “Medium Navi” is capable of a more. If clock scaling is reasonable, the RX 6700 XT could pose a formidable threat to NVIDIA’s upcoming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti.
